Prop Trading Guide

What Is a Prop Firm? Prop Trading & Funded Accounts Explained

Short answer: prop trading lets you trade a firm's capital instead of your own savings. You typically pay a fee to pass an evaluation with a profit target and strict loss limits; pass, and you trade a funded account and keep most of the profits — often 80%–90%+.

How getting funded works in 4 steps

  1. Step 1

Pick a firm & account size

Choose a program that fits your market (futures, crypto perps, stocks) and budget.

  2. Step 2

    Pass the evaluation

Hit the profit target while staying inside drawdown and daily loss rules.

  3. Step 3

Get the funded / PA account

Pay any activation fee and follow the funded-account rules.

  4. Step 4

    Request payouts

Withdraw your share of profits under the firm's payout schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What is a prop firm?

A prop firm (proprietary trading firm) provides trading capital or a funded trading account to traders who prove they can follow its risk rules. Retail prop firms usually charge an evaluation fee, then share profits with traders who pass.

How do prop firms make money?

Retail prop firms earn from evaluation, reset and activation fees, plus their share of profits from funded traders. Because many traders fail evaluations, fees are a major revenue source — which is why disciplined risk management matters.

Are prop firms legit?

Many established prop firms pay traders reliably, but quality varies. Check how long the firm has operated, its payout history and reviews, clear published rules, real customer support and who backs it before you buy an evaluation.

What is the consistency rule in a prop firm?

A consistency rule limits how much of your total profit can come from a single trading day (for example, no more than 30%–50%). It stops one lucky day from passing an evaluation or unlocking a payout. Not every firm uses one.

What is prop trading?

Prop (proprietary) trading means trading with a firm's capital instead of your own savings. In today's retail funded-trader programs, you usually pay a fee to take an evaluation; if you pass and follow the rules, the firm lets you trade a funded or simulated-funded account and shares part of the profits with you.

How does a funded trader evaluation work?

You trade a practice account with a profit target and strict risk limits, such as a maximum drawdown and sometimes a daily loss limit. Reach the target without breaking a rule, meet any minimum trading days, and you move to a funded (often called PA or performance) account.

Can I get funded without risking my own money?

You do not risk your own savings on trades, but you usually pay evaluation, activation or monthly fees. Those fees are your real cost and they are lost if you fail. Think of it as paying for a chance to trade larger capital with a capped downside.

What is trailing drawdown vs end-of-day drawdown?

A trailing drawdown follows your highest account balance (sometimes including open profits) upward, so a winning trade that reverses can still breach it. An end-of-day drawdown only updates at the close of the trading day, which is more forgiving intraday. Static drawdown never moves. Always read your firm's exact rule.

How do prop firm payouts and profit splits work?

Once funded, you request withdrawals of profits under the firm's payout rules, such as minimum days, buffers or consistency requirements. The profit split is the percentage you keep — commonly 80% to 90% or more. Check payout frequency, minimums and any rules that reset or reduce payouts.

Can I get funded to trade crypto perpetuals?

Yes. A growing number of programs, such as VEST Markets Perp Funding, offer funded accounts for perpetual futures on crypto and other assets. Rules, leverage limits and country eligibility differ from futures prop firms, so read the terms carefully.

Why do most traders fail prop firm evaluations?

The most common reasons are risking too much per trade, revenge trading after a loss, ignoring the daily loss limit, and rushing to hit the profit target. Small fixed risk per trade (for example 0.5%–1% of the drawdown allowance) and a daily stop dramatically improve your odds.

How do I choose a prop firm?

Compare the markets you can trade, drawdown type, daily loss rules, total cost to get funded, payout rules and speed, profit split, platform, country eligibility and the firm's track record and support. Start with one account and a written plan rather than buying many evaluations.

Is prop trading income guaranteed?

No. Most evaluations are not passed, and funded accounts can be closed for rule breaks. Treat prop trading as a skill-building path with real costs, not guaranteed income. This page is education, not financial advice.
